Many photographers and graphic designers these days still struggle with a concept of making a profit off their work online. While the images might be of the highest quality, you can’t always attract customers to your work and beat the competition with talent and creativity alone. And there is plenty of competition out of there for people specializing in this type of work.
Multiple websites sell stock images for sometimes small amounts of money, in every subject area from landscapes to food to office supplies. You might have even tried shooting pictures or designing graphics with each one of these themes in mind. But that’s where the problem often lies. If you tried attracting clients online and haven’t succeeded, you might have been spreading yourself too thin. If you really want to make a name for yourself or your business, pick a very narrow niche and become very good at it.
To become successful in a niche, you will need to study it inside and out, becoming almost as knowledgeable about the industry as the experts who work in it. For example, if you are taking pictures of wine or designing labels for the bottles, you should study the winemaking process, visit the vineyards, know the types of grapes and study the harvesting technology. When the winemakers see that you are just as interested in their work as they are, you are more likely to get business from them.
This article is a continuation in the series of articles related to selling stock photography online. As you may recall, a friend of mine decided that the Internet would be a great place for her (a busy mom with a passion for photography) to earn some extra money.
Her and I discussed the different avenues for pursuing this venture leveraging her photo-taking skills.
I talked to her about the different avenues for selling her photos in the world of stock photography. I told her that she could have her own web site, and also talked about selling in existing marketplaces. She wanted to know which one was the “best” to do.
My reply was simple: both.
I think that if the plan is a log term one, then having your own web site is a must. Also, jumping into existing marketplaces, I think is smart to help spread the word about your web site, and also make sales in the mean time.
Obviously the customers that already visit the pre-existing marketplaces will be your ideal customer base for your own web site in most cases. So it pays to impress them there and eventually filter them (ethically) into your own sales funnel.
Hi everyone, Keith here. In this article I’m going to be discussing, loosely, a conversation that I had with a photographer friend/neighbor of mine.
Ultimately we decided that I would help her setup a website to sell her photographs. I will be using WordPress because it is free and simple to use. During the case study I will show you how the site was built, where else her photos are being sold and how to do the same, some of the work that went in to gain traffic from search engines, and her initial successes, among other things.
I will also be recording how-to videos along the way that will help her with the setup and maintenance of her business, that I will share here with you as well. All bases will be covered and you will have all the information that you need to setup an online photo business yourself, or the content needed to help outsourcers set things up for you.
Explaining your passion for photos to someone, I can imagine, is almost impossible. Photography can be a rough business to get into, but it also can be very rewarding I’m sure. Some people look at a photographer and think, “Oh look at that person! They get paid to take pictures! What a breeze!” but most don’t realize that this intricate art takes time, effort, a keen eye, passion and an open heart. One thing that I hear time and time again from friends and family who’ve chosen to pursue photography as a career, is that it is difficult to get into this business.
That doesn’t have to be the case when looking into the online world to make a living with the passion of picture taking.
Today, we’re going to talk about building a website to sell photos; stock photography in particular. We’ll discuss why WordPress is a blessing for business web site development and how to make it work efficiently so that you can sell your photos, have some fun, and really enjoy your online presence instead of fearing it. There’s a huge opportunity for photographers of almost any level and when using WordPress, the process to get started is simplified. You not only have the opportunity to display your photography for the world to see and enjoy; you can make a career out of it. [Read more…]
The photos used on many websites, small to large, are often stock photography – See how you can leverage and/or profit from this industry.
Ever wondered where the photos people use in association with their articles, advertisements, and blog posts come from? Maybe you’re browsing the web and noticing that hardly any of the photos on any well-known websites appear to have come from an iPhone or other digi camera. The reason for that is because they probably didn’t.
Generally, for the photos on many websites, what the web masters are using are stock photos. Stock photos are essentially photos of almost anything and everything that you can use in association with your work. These are photos that are generally taken by professional commercial photographers or those who are aspiring to be commercial photographers.
